Vioxx Warning

Posted by Susan S on 5/24/00 at 08:25
I've had the best three weeks that I've had in over a year and I've been crediting this to Vioxx and a cort. shot that ironically helped both feet (see reply to John). Yesterday I had an assessment at the gym to set up a program that I could manage with my feet. If you are taking Vioxx CHECK YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE. Mine was through the roof. Poor guy thought his machine was broken and I proceeded with a partial assessment with a BP cuff on at all times. I knew I was having some trouble with mood swings and stress but that seems to be a given wtih PF. I was not told that this could happen and wasn't warned to keep a check on this. I have an appointment with my Medical Doctor tomorrow to see what's happening and have to go back to the gymto have it checked again today. While Pods and Orthos may know feet; the may NOT know a lot about the drugs they are dishing out. I feel sure that if my Ortho had known this he would have at least checked my BP when I had another appointment.
Be careful that in your search for a cure you don't create another problem like I did.

Thanks for the warning! I am going to try and have my blood pressure checked today. I have been on Vioxx for about a month now. I am also taking Meridia for weight loss and that may have the same effect. So far the Meridia has not caused blood pressure problems but it seems the two together may. I was never told the Vioxx may cause high BP.

Yes, Susan, thanks for that Vioxx information. I was just beginning to consider using it.

I have not had the blood pressure problem with Vioxx, but in the interest of my stomach, I usually take the lower dose. There is a 12.5 dose but doctors usually give the stronger pill.

Re: Vioxx Warning - Kidney damage?
Posted by Scott R on 5/24/00 at 12:05
My knowledge in this area is non-existent compared to a doctor's, but I think a sudden increase in blood pressure like that could indicate kidney damage. NSAIDS have a history of this. If my guess is correct, it could still be, or possibly was, a life-threatening situation. I do not know if it is permanent damage. It could be uncovering a pre-existing kidney condition rather than simply cause harm directly. I would not take another NSAID by mouth for the rest of my life unless it was absolutely necessary. Have you taken a lot of NSAIDS in the past?

==========
Long- term administration of N.A.D. has resulted in renal papillary necrosis and other renal injury. Renal toxicity has also been seen in patients in whom renal prostaglandins have a compensatory role in the maintenance of renal perfusion. In these patients, administration of a nonsteroidal anti- inflammatory drug may cause a dose- dependent reduction in prostaglandin formation a.d. secondarily, in renal blood flow, which may precipitate overt renal decompensation. Patients at greatest risk of this reaction are those with impaired renal function, heart failure, liver dysfunction, those taking diuretics and ACE inhibitors, and the elderly. Discontinuation of NSAID therapy is usually followed by recovery to the pretreatment state. Clinical trials with VIOXX at daily doses of 12.5 and 25 mg have shown renal effects (e. g., hypertension, edema) similar to those observed with comparator NSAIDs; these occur with an increased frequency with chronic use of VIOXX at doses above the 12.5 to 25 mg range. (See ADVERSE REACTIONS.)

my feelings about prescription drugs is "when in doubt ask a trusted pharmecist"...and couple that info with the info from any doctor...they know even more about drugs than doctors do.

susan: you may have heard of "white coat blood pressure". some people me included sometimes have a big jump in blood pressure when i am in a physicians office. i take my pressure almost daily at the gym or home and my pressure runs in the range of 125/75 with a pulse around 74. I can go to a doctors office and it can immediately jump to 150/95. i have taken both vioxx and celebrex and neither effected my blood pressure. if you do not have a blood pressure kit i suggest you buy a digital one which is reasonable and check your pressure under normal conditions at home. DO however see your doctor.

celebrex and vioxx have been on the market a couple of years now and i think celebrex is probably the most prescribed drug in existence. arthirits patients take it in lieu of 6-12 aspirin a day. with all the studies conducted by the FDA before approval and the wide use of the drug i would not be quick to point the finger at vioxx although the possibility does exist. white coat blood high blood pressure is very common and hopefully your high pressure may be nothing more than anxiety. certainly now that you have been freightened you can almost bet your pressure will be high if you just look at a stethescope. make sure your doc checks your pressure several times and gives you time to calm down. when you read the warnings on prescription drugs or even over the counter drugs you want to run away. this of course is to cover themselves in our sue oriented society. drugs provide life saving help and pain relief to millions and millions of people.

All nsaid can cause fluid retention and thus increase blood pressure. I have seen this on very rare occasions. Get it checked out by your family MD. The white coat hypertension is probaby the diagnosis . In addition I use to check everyone Blood Pressure in my office as new patients but stopped because everybody's pressure was abnormal. You need to take the reading a few times over a period of an hour. Go see family doctor and moniter this at home.

Through a lot of illness in my life I have come to realize that all medication has its drawbacks. It can be helpful but there are side effects with every medication so the secret is to try & get by with as little as possible. Particularly true of NSAids. Vioxx and Celebrex are particularly hard on you so try to limit what you take and change medication so you do not take one things for too long.

Beverly, I don't know what day you're leaving for your great-sounding vacation with your dad, so I just want to say I hope you have a wonderful time and the time off helps your feet. A whole month? You'll be missed here. Happy holiday --Nancy

My BP was better yesterday but I am not taking the Vioxx. Can't get in to the the medical doctor until Tuesday holiday weekend, ya know. But I did have it checked twice last night at the gym and it was a little better. I don't thinkn this was a case of "White coat BP" since it was at the gym.

you can drive your blood pressure up with your "mind" in an instant anywhere anytime.

Gosh, you're right! You are in a much better position to judge my mental state than I. What was I thinking?

bea: my understanding of vioxx and celebrex is that they were developed to avoid more stomach and intestinal problems than other nasids. that is why they have become such a big success. they can cause stomach problems but much less so than other nasids. the incidence of stomach problem with these drugs is quiet low compared to most all the other nasids. i agree the fewer drugs you have to take the better off you are but let us not forget at the turn of the century the life expectancy of an american was around 50 years. we can now expect to live 73-76 years. this is largely the result of advances in drug thearpy in both the treatment and prevention of disease. heart disease is way down partly because we can control blood pressure with drugs (which do have side effects). Lipitor can bring your blood cholesterol, lipids down dramatically in a couple of weeks and actually reverse the plaque buildup in arteries. ever drug has a drawback but that must be measured against the benefit.
