4 weeks ago i had a cortisone shot in my right foot which i had not had surgery on. today i had a shot in the other foot . the shot was from the side of the foot into the area where the band of fascia to the great toe connects to the heel. the shot was absolutely painless. a shot in the arm hurts more. the doc did spray it with a cooling fluid. there are 6 poditrist in the clinic with most having been there from 15-20 years. they use minimal invasive surgery for PF and he showed me the size of the incision which i guess to be 1/2 inch. he also suggested you need to release around 50% of fascia to relieve enough tension to adequately help your problem (i had a 15% release). his clinc does not think much of surgery thru an endoscope as they thought it more invasive and more chance of doing nerve damage. further stated the clinic has a patient satisfaction rate of approximately 85% over the years. i decided to try the footmax orthotic which dr zuckerman uses. it is computer generated when you walk across a pad with thousands of sensors in it. you can then view your foot pressure points on the computer or view the foot in 3D and various angles. the information is transmitted by modem to the manufacturer in canada. the Pod did not try and sell me these and had not seen them but did give me a prescription for a lab in my city that is equipped to fit them. they are thin enough to wear with most any shoe and are semi-regid. this is all just info for you to digest. Do not be afraid of a shot if you get one.

So, John, can I gather that the shot from 4 weeks ago is giving you some relief? By some freak of nature, did it get rid of the pain in your right foot?Kim B.

John glad to hear you are doing better. The MIS procedure has always been the better procedure. When I did MIS plantar releases I always
released the amount that was necessary to hear the release and always compare the opposite foot before, during , and after. I was one of the inventor's of the mis procedure. I have a relative who is in his 80"s who is the inventor all of mis procedure. I did some improvement but he was the inventor. I still remember the day that he taught this to me. Anyway they did a paper on EPF to determine how much was actually cut when the doctor tried cut 50% . AFter the procedure, they opened up the dead foot and found out the percentage was anywhere from 50-85%. I have found out that the release is a judgement and the amount detemined by feel and comparision of the opposite foot. I had an interesting call from an old classmate of mind today. He asked me about this ESWT and how much it costed and that he had a very close friend who he wanted to do this one. I started to tell him my opinion of plantar releases when the topic came up. He told me he had great results and that he has done about fifty and that they healed up in about three weeks. I told him bull ----. He actually wouldn't believe me when I told him it could take up to six months for it ( EPF's )to heal after the procedure. So he told me it wasn't done the right way. I didn't want to argue with him so I aske why he didn't want to do this on his close friend. He answered me that he did want to risk a long healing period. He was our Podiatric class president and I voted for him so I told him just bring you friend and I will do the ESWT procedure on him. I just though it was funny that you love the procedure but not on your family or friends . I have done ESWT and MIS on family members .The only problem that I see with EPF or MIS is that the procedures take to ---- long to heal . Six months is the magic time.

Hi John! Welcome back from Florida (I think?) I see you did indeed survive your quality time with your wife. Did your feet improve on vacation (like they do for many of us)?I have had a really good few weeks, up until this weekend. I found my feet and lower back have greatly improved since I stopped deep water running. My doctors cannot understand this - neither can I, but there is some connection. I did a lot of gardening, standing and hauling buckets this weekend. Last night I had hot feet and today I had unbelievable lower back and leg pain (the crawl-out-of-your-skin-rolling-the-eyes-in-the-back-of-your-head kind). It was somewhat relieved by stretching at lunch time.
Unfortunately, now that I have stopped deep water running - I am left without a cardio aspect for a work out. I will have to find a reasonable substitute quick - hopefully biking will be okay. I am starting to really feel the negative effects of not having a cardio workout as part of a routine (higher stress, lower lung capacity etc). If nothing else works, I may actually try walking - although it won't be fast maybe a fair distance would do the trick.

i had a set back in florida of sorts. i walked 2.5 miles for three days in a row on the side walk (not the beach) and probably walked 5 miles thru airports with my wife's bag which contained a 500 lb gorrilla. no way to get to the beach without walking in sand but did as little of that as possible. yeah! me and may wife really bonded don this trip. anyway- i am back home with my cats, computer, and job and still considering orbasone in the summer if i do not receive the relief i hope for. my expectations are not longer to run but to be able to walk 3 miles a day 5-7 days a week. if i ever run again it will be a gift from god.

John, I had the same experience with my last shot. It helped both feet. Glad to know I'm not the only one with loose screws!

Susan and John, what brand are your loose screws and where can I get some (to add to my collection). They sound like winners. --Nancy
